Resonance Skills and Masteries Guide

Choose the best Resonance skills first, compare all six Mastery branches, plan the 165-point tree and respec safely for parry, dodge or crowd builds.

For a balanced first playthrough, unlock Aegean Deflect first, Hero's Step second, and Bullbreaker Kick third. Aegean Deflect rewards the parry timing Resonance already expects, Hero's Step gives a second escape when red attacks or crowds break that rhythm, and Bullbreaker Kick solves shields and turns ledges into quick eliminations. If you prefer blocking and crowd control, move Echo's Return ahead of Bullbreaker Kick.

Sophia has six paid skill branches. Each contains one base skill and a 10-point Mastery purchase that unlocks two alternative effects; only one Mastery effect is active at a time, but switching between the two is free. The Skills menu also lets you reset the full tree and reinvest the refunded Resonance Points. Respeccing changes the build—it does not create extra points or repair points missed in an earlier chapter.

Best first-skill order

PrioritySkillPick it when…Recommended first Mastery
1Aegean DeflectYou parry regularly or struggle to stun tougher enemiesParry red melee attacks
2Hero's StepRed attacks, Brutes, or crowded arenas catch youSafer near-invulnerable second step
3Bullbreaker KickShields and tight spaces slow fights downGuaranteed push, or collision stun near walls
4Echo's ReturnSeveral normal/yellow attackers pressure you at onceCounter yellow attacks
5Heroic SurgeYou reliably create Critical Strike openingsProtection while charging a Critical
6Fated CastYou actively plan fights around bottles, knives, and hazardsMatch the Mastery to stun objects or knives

This is a low-friction order, not a universal tier list. A player who dodges instead of parrying should start with Hero's Step. A player chasing environmental kills can take Bullbreaker Kick early. Respec is most useful when a boss or arena exposes a weakness in the current setup, not after every normal fight.

How the 165-point skill tree works

The first base skill costs 5 Resonance Points. Each new base branch costs five more than the previous one, while each branch's Mastery unlock remains 10. Fully opening all six branches therefore costs 165 points.

Purchase orderBase skillMastery unlockBranch total
First51015
Second101020
Third151025
Fourth201030
Fifth251035
Sixth301040
All six10560165

The campaign contains 200 points, leaving a 35-point margin. That margin forgives scattered misses, but it does not make Chapter Select a farming method: replaying an old chapter restores the progression state saved for that chapter instead of adding points to the later save. Use the Resonance Points guide before relying on cleanup.

Aegean Deflect: best general first pick

Base effect: a last-moment parry deals much more stun damage. This shortens the path from reading an attack to opening a Critical Strike, so it improves the combat loop without requiring a new input.

Mastery choices:

  • Parry red melee attacks that normally force a dodge.
  • Stack bonus damage for the next sword attack after successful Deflects, up to two stacks; taking damage clears the bonus.

Choose red-attack parry while learning the game or fighting Brutes and spear users. Choose the damage stack only when perfect parries are already consistent—the bonus disappears precisely when a missed read hits Sophia.

Hero's Step: safest mobility upgrade

Base effect: double-tap Dodge to chain a second step with partial protection. It is valuable when an enemy combo continues beyond the first dodge or a second attacker enters from off-screen.

Mastery choices:

  • Become almost invulnerable during the second step.
  • Damage nearby enemies with a spinning step, in exchange for being easier to hit.

The defensive Mastery is the reliable first-playthrough choice. The damaging version makes sense only when you already understand attack strings and want the step to contribute to crowd damage rather than serve as an emergency exit.

Bullbreaker Kick: shields, walls, and ledges

Base effect: double-tap Kick for a stronger second kick that adds stun and pushes the target. Use it after breaking a guard, near a cliff, or when two enemies can be knocked into one another.

Mastery choices:

  • Guarantee that the second kick pushes even an enemy who is not fully stunned.
  • Increase stun when the kicked target collides with an enemy or the environment.

Take the guaranteed push in open areas with drops and spike hazards. Take collision stun in rooms where walls and clustered soldiers make a ring-out unlikely but repeated stun setups easy. This branch also helps with environmental-kill trophies without turning every encounter into a sword duel.

Echo's Return: crowd-control counter

Base effect: counter an incoming attack by taking control of the attacker and throwing them into nearby enemies, spreading stun through a group. It is strongest when Sophia is being surrounded and weakest in a clean one-on-one fight.

Mastery choices:

  • Allow Echo's Return to answer yellow attacks.
  • Use it on the final enemy to knock that target down and expose a short vulnerability.

The yellow-attack option is the broader upgrade because it expands the situations the counter can solve. The last-enemy option is more specialized and saves time at the end of encounters rather than stabilizing their dangerous opening phase.

Heroic Surge: Critical Strike protection

Base effect: killing with a Critical Strike grants a brief shield that absorbs the next hit. The skill is only as good as your ability to fill stun meters and recognize the charged Critical prompt.

Mastery choices:

  • Absorb one normal hit while Sophia charges a Critical Strike.
  • Hold the Critical input for a second charge level and higher damage.

Use the protection Mastery if incoming attacks repeatedly interrupt executions. Use the extra charge only when the arena provides enough space to hold the input safely. Players who rarely reach Critical openings should invest first in Aegean Deflect or Bullbreaker Kick, which help create those openings.

Fated Cast: throwable specialist

Base effect: store a picked-up throwable on Sophia's belt and launch it later instead of using it immediately. This lets you carry an answer from the edge of an arena into the moment a shield, group, or dangerous target needs it.

Mastery choices:

  • Make blunt/stun objects burst for area stun.
  • Turn a stored knife into a high-damage head throw that can pierce targets in its line.

Fated Cast is powerful only when you actually pick up and preserve objects. Choose the area-stun route for groups; choose the knife route for a dangerous priority target. If throwables tend to remain unused on the ground, buy a defensive branch first.

Focus Attack is not a paid branch

Focus Attack unlocks through the Chapter 4 story and does not consume Resonance Points. Attacks, parries, dodges, and Criticals build the yellow Focus gauge; when full, Focus produces a wide strike that can create space around Sophia.

Do not hoard it exclusively for bosses. A crowded normal arena is often the best use because the sweep interrupts pressure from several directions. Collecting Pierced Coin Charms adds a chance that using Focus will not empty the gauge, which is why the Charm route can improve the build without another skill purchase.

Three practical builds

Balanced first playthrough

Start with Aegean Deflect → Hero's Step → Bullbreaker Kick, using red parry, the safer second step, and guaranteed push. This covers parry, dodge, shields, and positioning before adding a more conditional tool.

Parry and stun build

Use Aegean Deflect → Echo's Return → Bullbreaker Kick → Heroic Surge. The loop is parry or counter, add stun through collision, then convert the full meter into a protected Critical Strike. Arm Band and Bracelet Charms strengthen the same rhythm.

Mobile survival build

Use Hero's Step → Aegean Deflect → Heroic Surge, with the near-invulnerable step, red parry, and Critical protection. This is forgiving when learning new enemies because every branch reduces a different kind of failed defensive read.

How to respec without losing progress

Open Sophia → Skills and use the reset option to refund the current purchases. Rebuy the branches you want in the new order and reselect one active Mastery effect for each unlocked branch. Check the active effect before closing the menu; owning both alternatives does not mean both run simultaneously.

The refund only redistributes already collected points. If the available balance cannot reach the setup you expect, check the point total in the Artefacts menu and continue the same forward-moving save. Do not load an early chapter expecting its pickups to merge into late-game progression.

Use the Resonance Points route to secure the 165-point total, the Charm guide for automatic passive bonuses, and the combat overview for parry, dodge, Critical, and attack-colour fundamentals. The trophy roadmap explains why full Mastery completion should happen before post-story cleanup.

Skill names, inputs, effect descriptions, cost progression, Mastery switching, and the full-tree reset were cross-checked on September 23, 2026 against the released-game descriptions reported by Neoseeker, a completed-build account from Phrasemaker, and independent combat documentation. Recommendations are based on the problem each skill solves rather than copied rankings.
